Biodegradable coffee capsules

Austrian packaging manufacturer Alpla and material manufacturer Golden Compound have developed a new type of fully biodegradable coffee capsule suitable for Nespresso coffee machines.

The new capsule is made of Golden Compound, a material called "Green", which is extracted from the natural fibers of sunflower seed husks.

The capsule itself, the filter layer and the lid are all biodegradable. Consumers can throw them into the compost at home and decompose naturally within six months.

Sunflower seed shells used in capsules are a by-product of the food industry, so this invention means efficient use of resources without generating additional carbon emissions burdens.

Once the capsule is composted, it will produce humus-organic matter produced by plant materials in the soil, and the filtered coffee particles after brewing are rich in nutrients such as potassium, phosphorus and nitrogen.

According to Alpla, the characteristics of the coffee in the capsule are also retained by the new capsule in a similar way to the plastic capsule packaging.

Austrian coffee producer Amann Kaffee has become the first company to use this new coffee capsule packaging.
